Did not know this answer, and found it with a big assist from Google. According to the "official" imagineer backstory, the Tree of Life was in fact planted by an ant. So WDWFan had it right!

Is WDWFan still around? Been quiet for a while.
I'd be fine, Schinkus, if you wanted to take the next round, and we'll give WDWFan a free pass upon return.

Works for me!
The Szalinski family in the now defunct Epcot show "Honey I Shrunk the Audience" brought on stage three different pets, a snake, a mouse, and a dog. What were the names of these pets?
P.S. Sorry to leave that other question hanging. It was, in fact, planted by an ant. There is a spot on Discovery Island where you can look through a hole and it looks straight at the ant. _________________ '00 - Studios Merch (Stage 1/Tatooine Traders/Coaster Photo/Fantasmic), '05-'06 - Attractions (KSR), Dinoland Merch, '06-'07 - Concierge (Multiple Resorts), '07-'08 - Dream Squad (Aminal Kingdom), '10 - DVC Member Services

CAIRat, you nailed it! Our next trip to WDW is less than a month away, going to look for the place on Discovery Island you mentioned. Thank you for that information!
Schinkus, if you cross the bridge into Discovery Island, go left. Past the entrance to Pandora (i.e. the Guest Black Hole) there is an entrance on the right to the Tree of Life Gardens. The path will take a sharp left a 100-ish feet in and there will be a bench in front of you with what looks like a rotted out chunk of tree bark behind it. Assuming it is still there, the "Ant Hole" is 1-2 feet in from the left and 3-4 feet off the ground if memory serves. There are multiple holes but only a fewe will look straight at the ant. He looks like he is climbing up the roots to the left of the tree (as you would be viewing it from that area). This trail is also a great place to get a better look at the kangaroos and other critters on Discovery Island. There is also a hidden path back in the area between Africa & Asia but that's another story. _________________ '00 - Studios Merch (Stage 1/Tatooine Traders/Coaster Photo/Fantasmic), '05-'06 - Attractions (KSR), Dinoland Merch, '06-'07 - Concierge (Multiple Resorts), '07-'08 - Dream Squad (Aminal Kingdom), '10 - DVC Member Services
