As my wording of the question was rather clumsy, you are technically correct. Asia didn't open in Animal Kingdom until the following year. The ride that opened with the area was actually Kali River Rapids, as well as the Maharaja Jungle Trek.

Asia is the park area I was looking for. With the clunky way I posed the question, Everest is technically a correct answer too, although the attractions that opened with the Asia section of the park in '99 were the Maharaja Jungle Trek and Kali River Rapids.

Asia is correct, but when the land was unveiled, the only attractions were the Maharaja Jungle Trek and Kali River Rapids!

Asia is correct, however the only attractions available on it's opening day were the Maharaja Jungle Trek and Kali River Rapids.

This is the kind of stuff I pride myself on knowing, but I'm in the dark on this one. Maybe the day Walt passed? |

Nope. The big event on that day wasn't actually sad. |

The opening of this event was broadcast on TV, but it was mainly a live event with a lot of people in attendance. |

It was the opening day!
Disaster on an almost epic scale. From an article I read: Hot, humid, ~10k counterfeit tickets, ran out of drinks, tarmac started melting & women's heels were sinking into it, not all the rides were working, several of those that did work broke down, etc. I think the paint in spots was still wet.

In what Disneyland attraction will you find a character unofficially known by both guests and cast members as "Harold"? |

Excellent guess - I'm sure most every ghost in there is known by cast members as something. The attraction Harold calls home is an iconic Disneyland attraction, though. |
