Five Walt Disney World guests and an employee were transported to the hospital Tuesday morning after the Kali River Rapids ride at Animal Kingdom was evacuated.

One of the rides' sensors caused the flumes to stop as they were traveling up a steep incline, prompting an evacuation about 10:20 a.m., said Bo Jones, deputy fire chief of the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

A platform designed to help transfer guests from the ride to the exit stairs malfunctioned during the evacuation.

One Disney employee may have suffered a bone fracture and the five guests suffered other minor injuries such as bruises and neck and back pain, Jones said.

The injured people included three teenagers, one 21-year-old and two people in their 40s.

Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty said the reason the ride stopped is being investigated along with how the evacuation platform malfunctioned.

Kali River Rapids remains closed for now, she said.

"Our primary concern is for those who are impacted by the incident," Prunty said. "We're trying to determine what happened."

So, apparently something caused the ride to stop and during evacuation, the evac platform/bridge collapsed or broke, causing the injuries...

Some other Disney news/rumors sites have stories ranging from a raft tipping over, construction equipment falling on a raft, the river was running red from blood, massive evacuations, etc...... this is all bunk....[/url]

Ok, I've seen the "river red with blood" and this being MUCH more serious that it seems.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see the final word.

Bay Lake -- Walt Disney World reopened the Kali River Rapids ride at Animal Kingdom about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday after six people were injured while they were being evacuated from the ride earlier in the day.

Disney spokeswoman Kim Prunty said the company conducted safety checks of the ride and did not find any problems.

It did determine, however, that the platform used to evacuate people from the ride vehicles "disengaged and slid."

She said, if necessary, the company will use an alternative method to evacuate people from the attraction, which features a raft ride through the turbulent waters of a jungle river.

Five Disney visitors and an employee were taken to hospitals after the incident. Prunty said all were released.

The attraction needed to be evacuated when one of the ride's sensors caused the rafts to stop as they were traveling up a steep incline, prompting an evacuation about 10:20 a.m., said Bo Jones, deputy fire chief of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, the government district that oversees Walt Disney World.

From what I've read on some other sites, those evacuation platforms were just recently installed (within the last year or so)... because it is being said that the platform either didn't extend properly or didn't lock into place properly.... since they are some what new, maybe the CM didn't have enough training or something of that nature (I'm not saying that is what happened, just speculation) or some unforceen issue that did not come up during testing...

Glad there were no serious injuries...
