Valdosta named TitleTown
By Bryan Fazio
VALDOSTA — TitleTown USA is Valdosta.
No surprise to the people of a town also called Winnersville, USA, the place in America which best represents the unique affinity a community shares with its title-winning professional, college and/or amateur teams and athletes is Valdosta.
ESPN brings its three-foot tall TitleTown USA trophy to the stage at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium at 2 p.m. today filming a segment to tell the world who the winner is.
Valdosta entered the mix in late June as one of 20 finalists for ESPN’s summer promotion, and had its segment aired July 16.
Nationwide online voting for the moniker began July 23, and Valdosta hit the mouse hard.
ESPN announced Friday night it was coming back to Valdosta Monday, and officially declared it the winner early Monday morning.
Valdosta has won around 500 titles on various levels with the Wildcats leading the way.
Valdosta High School has the most championships with 116 and the most notable coming on the gridiron. Crosstown rival Lowndes High has earned 95, despite being barely 40 years old. Valwood School, which was founded around the same time as Lowndes, has earned 55 titles in its history. Open Bible Christian School has won 34 titles. Georgia Christian School has won plenty of titles as well.
Valdosta State University owns 40 titles, including four national championships (three of which have come since 2004).
Local athletes have also won individual state or national championships in wrestling, track, golf, Taekwondo and mixed martial arts. Local little league teams also own a handful of championships.
The city’s first title came in 1920, when Valdosta High’s football team won the region championship (some people also claim an unofficial state championship for that team, which went 8-1 and defeated Athens 20-13 in the North-South Playoff).
Valdosta is such a mecca for TitleTown, former Valdosta Daily Times Sports Editor Mike Chason beat ESPN to the punch dubbing it Winnersville in 1978.
Thirty years later, Valdosta has a new banner to fly under, TitleTown USA.
So, not only are we known as Winnersville USA, we are now also known as Titletown USA... Congrats! _________________ Up or Down North, South, East, or West An Adventurer's Life is Best!

Oh BTW ... Last time I checked You can not get a PHD or MD or become a Lawyer ... Win a BCS Football Championship at Valdosta. Oh and you still have to live in Georgia and always be at best the third most loved College in the State after UGA and GT. _________________ Jason

I'm not trying to stir anything up.... but ESPNU will be broadcasting this year's Winnersville Classic on 10/10/08 @ 8:00pm. The Winnersville Classic features the rivalry of Lowndes High School vs Valdosta High School. This is the reason why Valdosta, Ga (both schools are in Valdosta) is ESPN's Titletown USA.
So, if you are fan of football, I recommend you check out.... Of course, I will be watching, cheering on my Vikings! Here's to keeping the undefeated season going and we are looking to move up from 2nd in the country to NUMBER 1!
GO VIKES!

Well, the high school football rankings are not as "solid" was college rankings. There are several polls and lots of differences between the polls.
Lowndes Co is ranked #2 in the ESPN poll, but is only #11 in the USA Today poll. ESPN's #1 Trinity, Euless, Texas, while they are only #2 in the USA Today. That's nto to mention the numerous "independant" sites, like PrepNation, MaxPreps, etc...
It is all about which poll you want to listed to.... _________________ Up or Down North, South, East, or West An Adventurer's Life is Best!
