Hmmmm I have 2 guesses.
1) Because only members of the Senate (Greeks I think) were permitted to wear the color (if you were caught in it the penalty was death)
or 2) Only royalty was twisted enough to figure out that boiling a child's urine (apparently anyone not just kids) makes a good dye. |
